Building a World-Class Fine Art Practice: Expertise, Capacity and a Passion for Protection

How Intact Insurance Specialty Solutions is expanding its Fine Art capabilities to help brokers navigate a growing and increasingly complex market
The world of fine art is evolving. From museum collections and commercial galleries to sports and entertainment memorabilia, rare books, and vintage fashion, today's market is broader, more dynamic and more valuable than ever before. To meet growing demand and better serve brokers and their clients, Intact Insurance Specialty Solutions is investing in expanding its dedicated Fine Art practice built on deep expertise, meaningful market relationships and a commitment to exceptional service.
Led by Rebecca Al Lahiq, an industry veteran with extensive experience in the fine art and collectibles space, Intact is entering an exciting phase of growth as it expands its capabilities across the United States and Canada.
More Than Masterpieces
While many people associate fine art insurance with famous paintings hanging in museums, the reality is far more diverse.
The Fine Art team provides specialized insurance solutions for private and corporate collections, museums, cultural institutions, galleries, traveling exhibitions and a wide range of collectibles. Today's collectors aren't just investing in traditional artwork. They may be building collections of rare books, sports memorabilia, comic books, Pokémon cards, or movie memorabilia.
"People collect all kinds of things," Rebecca explains. "What matters is that those items have value, whether financial, historical or personal. Our role is helping clients protect those collections with coverage that reflects their unique needs."
That flexibility is particularly important as the collectibles market continues to grow. Rebecca points to the increasing popularity of nostalgia-driven collecting as one of the most notable trends shaping the market today, with items such as trading cards, comic books and entertainment memorabilia commanding significant attention and value.
The Risks Behind the Collection
A significant part of the team's approach is helping brokers and clients better understand the unique risks associated with fine art and collectibles.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that valuable collections are always adequately protected under homeowners' or commercial property policies. In many cases, dedicated fine art coverage can provide broader protection, more appropriate valuation options and specialized claims handling that better aligns with the nature of the collection.
Education also extends to risk management and collection stewardship.
In fact, one of the most common causes of loss isn't the dramatic art heist often portrayed in movies, it's damage during transit.
Whether a painting is traveling to an exhibition, a collection is moving to a new home or an institution is transporting works across the country, movement introduces risk. Proper packing, specialized logistics providers and climate-controlled transportation can make a significant difference in protecting valuable and often irreplaceable items.
A Growing Practice Backed by Significant Capacity
As Intact Insurance Specialty Solutions continues to build its presence in the fine art market, one differentiator is already resonating with brokers: capacity.
With up to $300 million in capacity- subject to underwriting and applicable policy terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions- and the flexibility to write business in major art centers where some competitors face aggregation challenges, the Fine Art team is well positioned to support complex risks ranging from private collections to museums and prominent galleries.
"For brokers, capacity can be a real challenge, particularly in major art markets like New York," says Rebecca. "Our ability to be strategic in how we deploy our capacity allows us to solve problems and provide solutions where options may be limited."
That capability is already helping address a need in the marketplace and creating new opportunities for brokers whose clients may require larger limits or more specialized coverage than traditional markets can provide.
The team also has a genuine appreciation for the art and collectibles community and views involvement in the community as a critical component of the team's long-term strategy.
"We want to be more than an insurance provider," Rebecca says. "We want to be active participants in the community, contributing expertise, supporting education and helping build relationships that benefit brokers and clients alike."
Looking Ahead
The Fine Art team will continue to expand across North America. Intact’s vision is clear: build a team known for technical excellence, service that goes the extra mile and a genuine passion for the world it serves.
"I want brokers and clients to think of us as a first-class team that truly understands this space," Rebecca says. "Art and collectibles represent more than financial value. They tell stories, preserve history and connect generations. We're here to help protect those for years to come."
